The Glasshouse - Kew, Richmond, Surrey

The Glass House: Head Chef, Anthony Boyd first opened The Glasshouse in 1999. It is situated a stones throw from Kew Gardens tube station, near Richmond in Surrey and currently holds one Michelin Star. It is also the sister restaurant of Chez Bruce & La Trompett. The Glasshouse is probably the closest Michelin Star restaurant to my house and only 10 minutes on the tube. Absolutely perfect if you want to have a drink!!

Review: Our table was booked for 8.30pm on a Friday night and we arrive pretty much on time. We were greeted by a nice lady who took our coats. There was then a little confusion over who was going to take us to our table but once there we ordered a glass of house champagne and were presented with the menu and wine list.

It wasn't too long before we were offered some bread, a very nice olive and rosemary bread and some butter. I was particularly hungry so the bread didn't last long...

For starters, my wife opted for 'Pickled Beetroot with Buffalo Mozzarella, Pea Shoots, Toasted Hazelnuts and Gremolata' and I went for the 'Warm Salad of Wood Pigeon with Balsamic Vinegar and a Deep Fried Truffle Egg'. We both really enjoyed the starters, particularly the Wood Pigeon which was lovely, despite the lead shot that I discovered.

Main course for me was Roast Halibut with a Sea Food Bisque and little pieces of Macaroni. This was nice but I couldn't help wishing that I'd ordered the Lamb that my wife had ordered. It looked amazing, but was a little greasy whilst eating. This was all washed down with a bottle of Red Wine (Chateaux Haut-Goujon) at £50 a bottle which was lovely.

Instead of desert, I went for the selection of cheese 'Cheese from Neal's Yard and La Fromagerie' which was absolutely divine. I'm a big lover of cheese and this was great - the Epoisse was truly scrumptious. My wife selected the 'Home Made Vanilla Yoghurt with Plum Compote and Nut Crumble. She enjoyed it very much but couldn't help diving into my cheese!!!

The bill came to £183 which did include a couple of glasses of champagne and a glass of port at the end of the meal.

Conclusion: It was great, somewhere pretty local for me but worth a trip over to Richmond but I'd probably save myself £20 next time and swerve the champagne, it wasn't worth it. I might also opt for a slightly cheaper bottle of wine as they do offer wine from about £20. Good grub at a reasonable price (£37 per head, plus service)
